HISTORICAL TOWNS IN SOUTH MARCHE
DURATION: HALF DAY
Ascoli Piceno, which many call a “volume of art history to consult in the open air”, is no doubt a display of extraordinary wealth of monuments and styles dating back to different eras. However, Ascoli is also the “town of the hundred towers” and white travertine. This material embellishes the central Piazza del Popolo, an open-air lounge in the historical downtown, which also hosts several jewels of local culture, such as the Ventidio Basso Theatre, the Municipal Art Gallery and the Cathedral. The Cathedral in particular is not to be missed for it features artworks by Carlo Crivelli. The local gastronomy specialties and pride of the wine and food industry in the Marche region are Ascoli’s stuffed olives and the “vincisgrassi”, treats that one must absolutely taste.
